ON THE GROWING SEASON |
2013 UMOPN |
LACOMBE, ALBERTA |
At
Lacombe, seeding time was normal, seed went into good moisture, there was
good uniform emergence. |
We had
good moisture throughout the summer. August was fairly wet, and as a result
maturities were later. Yields were really good this year though. Total
moisture was 275 mls. |

We had
a high-yielding growing season this year, although the percent thins are
rather higher than normal. Glenlea had normal rainfall, but really pleasant
temperatures, with no extreme highs or lows. Farmers in the area are really
pleased with their oat crops. |

OTTAWA, ONTARIO |
The growing conditions at Ottawa can be
considered as typical of Ottawa. We have had a lot of rains in the |
early season, which brought about a
heavy crown rust pressure. Lodging was very common due to rain + wind |
during the grain filling period.
Although lodging data were not reported in this table, I believe its effects,
along |
that of crown rust, on yield and test
weight has been reflected in these traits. |

We had good soil moisture in
spring but no rain until June. The
summer was a bit cooler than |
normal until the end of
August, the last 2 weeks of August were hot. |
URBANA, IL |
Good growing conditions with no hot
temperatures and ample soil moisture.
Lodging occurred late in the |
season. |
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN |
We planted on April 6, which is a full
month later than 2012 and about 2 weeks later than normal. Our |
research farm had the
wettest April on record with 9.07”. Strong rust pressure and excessive rains
at harvest |
causing lodging cut average
yields by about 25% from 2012 yields. |
EAST LANSING, MI |
The
growing sesson was unusual. Twice the average rainfall in April and
June. The early growth was subjected
to freezing temperatures (28 degrees) in mid-May and a week later it was 88
degrees. June and July temperatures
were normal, although Michigan weather is never normal!

ST. PAUL, MN |
Late planting was off-set by adequate
moisture and moderate temps though the season. Rust pressure |
appeared very late, but very strong. |
MORRIS, MN |
Late planting possibly lowered overall
yield from recent record years, but timely showers made for adequate |
moisture through the season. |
ITHACA, NY |
The growing season averaged
about 0.5 degrees warmer than normal and rainfall was 0.5 inches above |
average rainfall with a total of 17.5 inches
for the growing season in Ithaca. |
CARRINGTON, ND |
The Carrington UMOPN was
planted May 15 with adequate soil moisture for uniform
germination. |
The remainder of the season
was characterized by hot and dry conditions. |
FARGO, ND |
The Fargo UMOPN was planted
May 7 after being delayed by wet conditions.
Emergence was |
uniform, but the nursery
suffered from excessive soil moisture that led to uneven development. |
July and August were
extremely hot and dry. Crown rust
developed quickly and affected the most |
susceptible lines. |
MINOT, ND |
The Carrington UMOPN was
planted May 15 with adequate soil moisture for uniform germination. |
The remainder of the season
was characterized by hot and dry conditions. |
ITHACA, NY |
The
growing season averaged about 0.5 degrees warmer than normal and rainfall was
0.5 inches |
above average rainfall with
a total of 17.5 inches for the growing season in Ithaca. Pretty normal |
growing season overall. |
MADISON, WI |
2013 started out on the late
side with a cold, wet spring. Planting was done on May 2nd. |
Germination looked good with
even stands. Early season rainfall was more than adequate with |
fairly normal temperatures.
There were no periods of prolonged heat or drought. The frequency |
of the rain made it hard to
get cultural practices done in a timely manner. This allowed the grassy |
weeds to get the upper hand
and that was the biggest problem this summer. April mean |
temperature was 43.2 F with
4.91 inches of rain. Mean temperature for May was 59 F and we |
had 6.15 inches of rainfall.
June had a mean temperature of 67.3 F with 10.2 inches of rain. July |
and August were relatively
cool with adequate rainfall. July’s
mean temperature was 70.7 F |
and August had a mean
temperature of 70.3 F. July and August
rainfall combined was |
4.2 inches. The UEOPN was
harvested on August 6th and the UMOPN on August 15th. Yields |
are decent and bushel
weights are fairly high. Lodging pressure was light. Levels of CR were |
moderate and BYDV levels
were low. |
