COMMENTS ON THE GROWING SEASON
for the 2013 UEOPN
URBANA, IL
Good growing conditions with no hot temperatures and ample soil moisture.  Lodging occurred late in the
season.
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN
We planted on April 6, which is a full month later than 2012 and about 2 weeks later than normal. Our
research farm had the wettest April on record with 9.07”. Strong rust pressure and excessive rains at harvest causing lodging cut average yields by about 25% from 2012 yields.

ST. PAUL, MN
Late planting was off-set by adequate moisture and moderate temps though the season.  Rust pressure
appeared very late, but very strong.
WASECA, MN
Plots had more variability than years previous.  Colder temperatures resulting in later planting and emergence
may be the culprit.  Reduced moisture during pollination and seed fill could also be partially responsible.

MADISON, WI
2013 started out on the late side with a cold, wet spring. Planting was done on May 2nd.
Germination looked good with even stands. Early season rainfall was more than adequate with
fairly normal temperatures. There were no periods of prolonged heat or drought. The frequency
of the rain made it hard to get cultural practices done in a timely manner. This allowed the grassy
weeds to get the upper hand and that was the biggest problem this summer. April mean
temperature was 43.2 F with 4.91 inches of rain. Mean temperature for May was 59 F and we
had 6.15 inches of rainfall. June had a mean temperature of 67.3 F with 10.2 inches of rain. July
and August were relatively cool with adequate rainfall.  July’s mean temperature was 70.7 F
and August had a mean temperature of 70.3 F.  July and August rainfall combined was
4.2 inches. The UEOPN was harvested on August 6th and the UMOPN on August 15th. Yields
are decent and bushel weights are fairly high. Lodging pressure was light. Levels of CR were
moderate and BYDV levels were low.
SASKATOON, SAS
We had good soil moisture in spring but no rain until June.  The summer was a bit cooler than
normal until the end of August, the last 2 weeks of August were hot.
