| COMMENTS ON GROWING CONDITIONS | |||||||||
| 2006 UMOPN | |||||||||
| LACOMBE, ALBERTA | |||||||||
| There was 323mm of rainfall during the growing season. | |||||||||
| OTTAWA, ONTARIO | |||||||||
| Our oats were planted into ideal conditions on the 20th of April. The emergence was | |||||||||
| uniform about 10 days after planting. In my opinion the growing season was pretty | |||||||||
| average (only a few weeks of real humid weather) with a bit more rain than usual. We | |||||||||
| had a huge transition with our rust. The data in this test may not reflect, but it did have | |||||||||
| an affect on yield and should be listed as a rust affected site. We applied no fertilizer, as | |||||||||
| we followed clover and beans. We applied Buctril M (for broadleaf control) at the 4-leaf | |||||||||
| stage. | |||||||||
| WINNIPEG, MANITOBA | |||||||||
| A reasonably wet spring followed by heat and drought thoughout the rest of the season. | |||||||||
| A total of 218mm of rainfall was received during the growing season. | |||||||||
| AMES, IA | |||||||||
| A mild winter was followed by a cool and wet spring in 2006. The nurseries were planted | |||||||||
| slightly later than average. Warm dry weather during May and June produced yields that | |||||||||
| were lower than in 2005. Disease was not a major problem this year. | |||||||||
| ABERDEEN, ID | |||||||||
| Aberdeen had a normal temperature regime during the growing season. Precipitation was | |||||||||
| above normal for the first part of the season and near to slightly above normal for the | |||||||||
| remainder of the season. The harvest period was dry and grain quality high. We again | |||||||||
| had infestations of Cereal Leaf Beetle throughout the plots, but below threshold values. | |||||||||
| URBANA, IL | |||||||||
| Very severe BYDV in these plots. BYDV significantly reduced yields. Fertilizer:80 lbs | |||||||||
| N/A. Phosphorous and potassium ok by soil test. Herbicide: Buctril at 1 pint/A. | |||||||||
| WEST LAFAYETTE, IN | |||||||||
| Growing conditions for oats were excellent from mid-March to early July, reflected in | |||||||||
| grain yield and test weight. We did have a strong wind storm in late June, which caused | |||||||||
| significant leaning of most of the plots, so we did not report lodging notes. However, the | |||||||||
| plants were standing sufficiently so as to finish grain fill fairly normally. | |||||||||
| EAST LANSING, MI | |||||||||
| MORRIS & ROSEMOUNT, MN | |||||||||
| The year started with a mild winter following a dry last 1/3 of 2005 and thus the entire | |||||||||
| state was quite dry until at least into March. Early in spring we had good rains | |||||||||
| so that at many locations planting was delayed, but did happen into good soil moisture. | |||||||||
| Emergence was good and development very good until early in June when it became | |||||||||
| quite hot and very dry. Some areas received less than 1/2 inch of rain for all of June and | |||||||||
| July combined. Early in May buckthorn bushes everywhere were heavily infected with | |||||||||
| 5 | |||||||||
| crown rust. However, with the start of the heat and no rain in June, very little crown rust | |||||||||
| developed on the oats in most locations. Yields and quality were reduced from that in | |||||||||
| non-rusted fields in 2005, but generally producers were satisfied, given the somewhat | |||||||||
| unfavorable oat growing weather conditions. There was relatively little lodging. | |||||||||
| CARRINGTON, ND | |||||||||
| FARGO, ND | |||||||||
| MINOT, ND | |||||||||
| The nursery was planted into a seedbed with adequate soil moisture for uniform | |||||||||
| emergence. Dry conditions and high temperatures prevailed throughout the growing | |||||||||
| season. No diseases were evident. | |||||||||
| ITHACA, NY | |||||||||
| Temperatures were close to normal throughout the growing season. Precipitation was | |||||||||
| erratic with very dry conditions in March, April and May followed by record rainfall in June | |||||||||
| and July. Over the growing season, the mean temperature was only 0.6 degrees F above | |||||||||
| normal and precipitation was 3.9 inches above normal. | |||||||||
| BROOKINGS, SD | |||||||||
| At the Brookings location, soil moisture conditions were very wet at planting and were | |||||||||
| adequate throughout the growing season. Temperatures were cool early; however, as the | |||||||||
| growing season progressed they became extremely hot. Crown rust infections caused | |||||||||
| significant yield losses for susceptible varieties and lines. | |||||||||
| WATERTOWN, SD | |||||||||
| At the Watertown location, soil moisture was excessive at planting; however, as the | |||||||||
| growing season progressed soil moisture conditions deteriorated to dry. Temperatures | |||||||||
| were cool early; however, as the growing season progressed they became extremely hot. | |||||||||
| Disease and lodging were non-existent. All plots were sprayed with Bronate at the 4-5 leaf | |||||||||
| stage. | |||||||||
| MADISON, WI | |||||||||
| Planting was done on 4-15-06 into an excellent seedbed. Decent rainfall and cooler | |||||||||
| temperatures during the early growing season led to good germination and even | |||||||||
| stands. Weather pattern for most of the summer was alternating cloudy and rain for | |||||||||
| 2-3 days, then sunny for 2-3 days. Very few periods of continuous good weather | |||||||||
| occurred. Severe storms on July 20th flattened the nursery. Levels of crown rust, stem | |||||||||
| rust and BYDV were moderate to high compared with the previous three years and | |||||||||
| occurred later than normal. Even so, yields and test weights were good. | |||||||||
