CDC ALAMO, a 2-rowed hulless barley with 100% amylopectin (zero amylose) starch make-up developed at the Crop Development Centre, was registered for sale in Canada in December, 1999. CDC Alamo is a 2-row hulless variety with a unique starch composition previously not available for commercial production. While its yield is 10 - 15% lower than newer regular starch hulless barley, it has reasonable threshability, very large plump grain and very good straw strength. It has moderate scald resistance, but is susceptible to most other important diseases.
CDC Alamo's unique starch composition should make it a variety of interest for specialty food and industrial uses.
CDC Alamo was tested as SB94794 and HB340 and originates from the cross SB85750/Arizona Hulless Waxy, where SB85750 is a CDC 2-row hulless waxy starch breeding line and Arizona Hulless Waxy is an 6-rowed waxy starch breeding line from the University of Arizona. CDC Alamo has been released exclusively to Agricore for Pedigreed seed production and marketing as well as commercial production and market development. Certified seed should be available by the spring of 2002.
