CDC BOLD, a 2-rowed hulled semi-dwarf feed barley developed at the Crop Development Centre, was registered for sale in Canada in June, 1999. CDC Bold is a 2-row variety with short, strong straw and high yield potential similar to that of 6-row semi-dwarf varieties such as

CDC Earl, Tukwa and Kasota. Being 2-rowed, it has superior grain quality having larger, plumper grain with greater bulk density. It carries the Rpg1gene for stem rust resistance, has scald resistance similar to CDC Earl and is moderately resistant to the spot-form of net blotch and to both false loose and covered smut. It is susceptible to true loose smut and net-form net blotch.

CDC Bold's combination of high quality and high productivity combined with good straw strength should mean it should be well adapted to the wetter areas of Saskatchewan and Alberta where lodging is a general concern for high yielding feed barley production.

CDC Bold was tested as SB94386 and SD422 and originates from the cross SB88403/Tyra, where SB88403 is a CDC breeding line and Tyra is a semi-dwarf variety from Norway. CDC Bold has been released exclusively to Canterra Seeds Ltd. for Pedigreed seed production and marketing. Certified seed should be available by the spring of 2001.
