INFORMATION ABOUT THE BARLEY NEWSLETTER

  1. Comments on the 1998 Barley Newsletter

    The Editorial Committee thanks all who submitted articles for the 1998 Barley Newsletter and those who took the time to request that their names be maintained on the mailing list. The articles were in good condition, and appear as they were submitted. Because all submissions were either on disk or sent via email, and since Volume 42 will be available on-line via GrainGenes, fonts, spacings etc. were left as each individual author provided them.

  2. Mailing/Address List

    The mailing list is prepared newly each year, based on authors of articles submitted and requests from individuals asking specifically that their names be placed on the list.

    The Barley Newsletter is published electronically and on paper. For the electronic version see: http://wheat.pw.usda.gov/ggpages/BarleyNewsletter . The paper version is available with advance payment of a subscription fee to the publisher, the American Malting Barley Association, Inc. (AMBA). Order forms for the next available issue will be distributed by AMBA to the address list and GrainGenes. AN address list of subscribers, authors and other interested parties is included for informational purposes in each issue.

    If you want to receive Volume 43 and are not submitting an article please check your address on the list in this volume and notify the publisher of any changes. Where possible, please share your copy of the Barley Newsletter with others to reduce the number of copies that must be distributed and advise them of access under GrainGenes.

  3. The 1999 (Volume 43) Barley Newsletter

    The Barley Newsletter Editorial Committee for the years 1998 to 2001, elected at the North American Barley Researchers Workshop in July 1996 are:

    Articles for Volume 43 of the Barley Newsletter should be received by the editor by April 30, 2000. The editor encourages you to submit your contribution several weeks earlier than the deadline if you can do so. The Newsletter primarily is intended for informal communication among barley researchers. Information on any phase of barley research is welcomed, but contributions must conform to the following guidelines:

    Instructions to Authors

    1. Submit articles in English. Limit the length to no more than 3 or 4 pages, single spaced. Manuscripts must be submitted on disk or via email, see section c. below. If sending a disk an original hard copy on good quality paper would also be appreciated.

    2. Manuscripts should be very carefully proofed. Occasionally where the author's native language is not English, and only minor changes are needed, an attempt to edit may be made. Manuscripts considered unsuitable for inclusion will be returned to the author(s) for possible revision and re-submission for a future volume.

      1. Acceptable Fonts: Please submit only in Arial or if not available use Courier News. All materials including tables must be submitted in Portrait format; landscape format is not acceptable. Please submit manuscripts on a 3½ diskette or via email to brian.rossnagel@usask.ca and indicate the word-processing software used to prepare the file. MSWord 7.0 is preferred. WordPerfect is acceptable, but if using WordPerfect please also include your manuscript as an ASCII/text only file.

      2. DO NOT include Tables created using tabs. Authors must use the Table Format in MSWord or Wordperfect when preparing tables. All materials including tables must be submitted in Portrait format; landscape format is not acceptable.

        Authors submitting graphs or figures must send them as a separate GIF or JPG files.

      3. All pages must be in portrait format and have a left and right-hand margin of 3 cm, a top margin of 3.5 cm and a bottom margin of 3 cm. Do not number pages. Do not include headers or footers.

      Contributions should be titled as follows:

      Author(s)
      Affiliation

      Affiliation of authors should be brief since mailing addresses will be listed in the back of the Newsletter.

    3. Omit contributions that are strictly of local interest and do not submit manuscripts intended for publication or already published in recognized journals.

    4. Examples of appropriate topics for the Newsletter are:

      1. Useful and interesting germplasm, including new cultivars and parental or genetic stocks that should be of interest to others.

      2. New or innovative procedures for laboratory, greenhouse, or field use.

      3. Cultivar tests or breeding nursery management procedures that are new, more efficient, effective, or improved in some way over old ones.

      4. Objectives of your breeding program, including parental sources of resistance or for other traits being emphasized.

      5. Screening procedures for diseases, insects, yield, or quality traits.

      6. New breeding techniques, methodologies, or equipment.

      7. Personnel changes.

      8. Philosophies, ideas or comments that would be interesting or useful to other barley researchers.

      9. An update on barley production or the cultivar complex in your area or country.

    5. Contributions received after April 30, 2000 may not be included in Volume 43.

      Volume 43 of the Barley Newsletter will be available on the internet under GrainGenes. Contributors wishing to receive a hard copy must contact the American Malting Barley Association, Inc., 735 North Water Street, Suite 908, Milwaukee, WI 53202, USA) directly and will be expected to pay a small fee for that service. The Barley Newsletter is not normally distributed to libraries.

Hard copies of the Newsletter will no longer be distributed on a complimentary basis by the publisher. Paper versions will be available with an advance payment of a subscription fee to the publisher. If you wish to receive a hard copy of the next volume, please contact the American Malting Barley Association, Inc. for details, costs etc.

    The Barley Newsletter will still maintain a barley worker's address list for informational purposes in the back of each issue. Even if you are not ordering a paper copy, please check your address, note any changes, and advise the American Malting Barley Association, Inc.
