CDC DAWN, a two-rowed hulless barley variety developed at the Crop Development Centre, has been registered for sale in Canada. Developed as a replacement for CDC Richard, released in 1990, CDC Dawn demonstrates improved yield potential (8% greater than CDC Richard and 12% greater than Condor), better straw strength than Richard, and improved net blotch resistance. CDC Dawn also is resistant to scald, carried the Rpg1 gene for stem rust resistance, but, as all other registered hulless varieties, it is susceptible to all three forms of smut. CDC Dawn has grain quality similar to CDC Richard, being low in beta-glucan and acid-viscosity, but is not quite as free threshing.

CDC Dawn was tested as SB90391 and HB316 and is from the cross SB86154 x Manley, where SB86154 is a CDC hulless breeding line with good disease resistance derived from CDC and AAFC Winnipeg breeding material. CDC Dawn has been released exclusively to Secan for seed production and distribution. Limited Certified seed supplies should be available by the spring of 1997.
