Protocol
Lemma color was scored in shaded sunlight on three seed sources for each cultivar, 1)the original seed obtained from the breeder or the USDA National Small Grains Collection, 2)a field seed increase nursery, and 3)a winter greenhouse seed increase. Observed colors were compared to cultivar release descriptions when available. Three loci were assumed to control lemma color and three types of color were scored: white/non-white, grey/non-grey, red/non-red. Red lemma was assumed to be dominant to white in all cultivars and light grey additive to white and red. Two levels of grey and red were recognized, light (one gene) and dark (two genes), although Joanette was the only dark grey cultivar in this survey.
