Abstract	A dichotomous classification of 1019 accessions of durum wheat ( Triticum durum ) was carried out based on the morphological parameters of the ears and grains at maturation. The study carried out from 1995/96 to 1997/98 in Khroub, Algeria indicated a diversity in both form and colour of the ears, awns and grains, and glume pilosity, resulting in the determination of 19 botanical varieties. Discriminant factorial analysis identified glume pilosity as well as grain and glume colour as the most important characters. Therefore, this study suggests that the diversity in our collection is a pre-selection phase of varieties adapted to climatic conditions of semiarid regions. Moreover, certain varieties are distinguished by adaptation characters to water stress, and others by their yield quality and productivity
