Abstract
The properties of the temporal and spatial distributions of leaf N and the relationship between leaf N and grain quality in winter wheat were investigated in the field. The temporal and spatial distributions varied between the 2 wheat cultivars, Jingdong 8 and Zhongyou 9507. The maximum leaf N was observed at 16 and 8 days after reviving for Jingdong 8 and Zhongyou 9507, respectively. The leaf N content of Zhongyou 9507 decreased faster than that of Jingdong 8. The leaf chlorophyll content showed a similar trend to that of leaf N. There were apparent differences in the total N index (TNI), leaf chlorophyll index (CI) and leaf area index (LAI) in the different layers of Jingdong 8, while Zhongyou 9507 showed less layer gradients of these. At jointing, the TNI, CI and LAI varied in the 2 cultivars in different layers during anthesis. At grain filling, the second layer of both the 2 cultivars had the highest TNI. The leaf N vertical gradient and the N output amount between the 2 cultivars varied. The leaves in the different layers contributed differently to grain quality
