Abstract
A laboratory experiment was conducted to compare the transgenic Roundup Ready 'Bobwhite' wheat with nontransgenic 'Bobwhite' wheat for their responses to and effects on greenbug (Schizaphis graminum), Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia) and wheat curl mite (Aceria tosichella). Two days after infestation, the population increases of greenbug and Russian wheat aphid did not differ significantly on Roundup Ready wheat and nontransgenic 'Bobwhite' wheat. The number of days of seedling survival, after infestation with 10 greenbugs or Russian wheat aphids, for both plants also did not differ significantly. There were no significant differences in wheat curl mite population increases on Roundup Ready wheat or nontransgenic 'Bobwhite' wheat initially infested with 10 wheat curl mites per plant. There was no significant difference in the transmission rate of wheat streak mosaic virus to Roundup Ready and normal 'Bobwhite' wheat infested with 5 viruliferous wheat curl mites per plant. Based on the responses of greenbug, Russian wheat aphid and wheat curl mite, Roundup Ready wheat had no direct effect on the pests, which supports the hypothesis that this noninsecticide genetic insert is unlikely to affect nontarget organisms
