Abstract
In a study of the relationship between swelling index of glutenin (SIG) and SDS sedimentation, the value of the SIG test on the potential for utilization of pure lines and cross progenies for quality improvement was assessed. The SIG test was conducted on 15 wheat cultivars (pure lines) and showed that it was highly significantly correlated with wet gluten content, gluten index and SDS sedimentation. The SIG test may accurately predict the protein quality in wheat pure lines. The SIG test of individual plants in different progenies of Xaoyan 22 x Xaoyan 738 and Xaoyan 22 x Xaoyan 707 showed very significant correlations with their micro-SDS sedimentation values. The coefficient of variation of SIG values and micro-SDS sedimentation values in progenies of F2, F3 and F4 was higher than 10%. The heritabilities in the broad sense of micro-SDS sedimentation values and SIG values in the two crosses were very high, respectively. The screen efficiency of SIG values in wheat quality detection was the same as that of SDS sedimentation test in pure lines and individual plants of segregating progenies. The SIG method is proposed as a small-scale, quick, and accurate method for wheat quality detection in wheat early generation breeding
