Abstract
The greenbug [Schizaphis graminum (Rondani)], is a pest of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Only two sources of greenbug-resistant wheat germplasm were documented prior to 1980. In the last 5 yr, three additional sources have been identified. Since there are now five distinct sources of resistance, it is appropriate to assign numerical designations to these genes, as this will aid in communications among breeders and geneticists. Our objective was to show that greenbug resistance in the wheat germplasms 'Dickinson' Selection 28A (DS 28A), 'Amigo', 'Largo', CI 17959, and CI 17882 is conditioned by five different genes. Two criteria were used to distinguish genes: differing reactions to a greenbug biotype and nonallelism. Original data and a review of literature were combined to show that the five genes are different. The numerical designations Gbl, Gb2, Gb3, Gb4, and Gb5 were suggested for the genes in DS 28A, Amigo, Largo, CI 17959, and CI 17882, respectively.
