Abstract	Of 71 lines derived from the variety Burt, 13 carried the Sd1 gene, 27 had Sd2 and the genotypes of the rest were unidentified. Those carrying Sd1 were superior in grain yield, test weight, 1000-grain weight and emergence-rate index and had longer coleoptiles and first leaves than lines carrying the Sd2 gene. Lines with Sd2 had shorter culms than those with Sd1. There was some evidence that lines with Sd1 were better adapted to unfavourable yield conditions than those with Sd2.
