Abstract
Fourteen wheat cultivars were screened for grain resistance to R. dominica, using standard no-choice and free choice tests. The cultivars were: PBW 343, HD 2501, HD 2687, NP 200, HD 2189, C 273, HD 2643, HD 2733, NP 710, UP 262, UP 2388, WH 542, HD 2380 and HD 2428. The effects of plant powders from Tinospora cordifolia, Phyllanthus niruri and Azadirachta indica (at 0.25, 0.50, 1.0 and 2.0%) on infestation on the susceptible and resistant cultivars was also investigated. The least susceptible genotype was HD2643, while the most susceptible was HD 2733. P. niruri was the most effective botanical insecticide for controlling the pest, in terms of reducing the progeny emergence of the pest. The powders at 1 and 2% concentrations were effective in reducing grain weight loss, but a significant reduction of weight loss was also observed at 0.5%
