GrainGenes Pathology Report: Rhizoctonia Root Rot
Pathology
Rhizoctonia Root Rot
Type
Fungus
Host Species
Triticum aestivum Hordeum vulgare Avena sativa
Causal Organism
Rhizoctonia solani Heterodera avenae
Symptoms
Seedling infections often create distinct patches of dead (bare patch) or stunted plants expressing a dull blue-gray color (purple patch). Surviving plants remain stunted and often lodge or produce white heads, similar to numerous crown rot diseases. Roots are girdled and often severed in the upper six inches of the soil profile. Severed root tips appear reddish-brown and taper to a spear-shaped point. Rhizoctonia root rot is favored by reduce and no-till tillage practices.
