Brittle rachis in T. durum was defined as a spike that disarticulated when the tip was bent by 45 degrees relative to the peduncle (Watanabe, 2005).
In chromosome substitution lines of wild emmer to common wheat, the 3AS derivative was more brittle than the 3BS derivative (Millet et al. 2013).
Wedge (W) type disarticulation is associated with the Br-1 gene set whereas barrel (B) type disarticulation is caused by a different gene and is limited to species with the D genome (Li and Gill, 2006).
