Comment
The majority of studies report that a single dominant gene determines red glume color. A few papers report two factors (Torrie, 1936; Vacenko, 1936; Miczynski, 1938). Red glume color in Swedish land cultivars is apparently associated with hairy glumes (Schmalz, 1958) suggesting, because Hg is located in chromosome 1A, that a red glume factor different from Rg1 is involved in the Swedish stocks. Nothing is known of the possible association of such a gene with Bg, another glume color gene on 1A. See (Zeven, 1983) for review.
