Metabolomics for Better Barley, Malt, and Beer position:

The Cereal Crops Research Unit is a USDA-ARS research institution whose mission is providing solutions for barley breeders, barley farmers, malt producers, brewers, distillers, and consumers. Research programs are focused on supporting stakeholders by building resilience in the form of better barley varieties and better farm management practices. Under the guidance of a mentor, the intern/fellow will have the opportunity to perform fundamental and applied research on several active research projects. Specifically, the selected applicant will have the opportunity to contribute in our effort to: 1) Identify compounds that contribute to specific flavor profiles in beer, and determine the relevant biochemical pathways in barley, field microbes, and/or brewing yeasts; 2) Use metabolite markers to model traits of interest to barley breeders, growers, and malt producers; 3) Identify allelopathic compounds released from barley that inhibit germination; 4) Provide commercial brewers and distillers more detailed malt metabolite profile information to help in their malt selection for their production processes; 5) Assess the utility of non-chemical seed treatments to accelerate germination; and 6) Provide growers with Nitrogen and Sulfur management recommendations based on metabolite profiles.
