Protocol
The sheath pubescence on the fully elongated sheath of the first true leaf was visually scored for pubescence density on a scale of 1-5 (glabrous=0, most pubescent=5). If a cultivar was pubescent for one of the traits in at least one of the plantings, it was scored as pubescent for that trait and the average visual score of the two plantings assigned as the cultivar's phenotypic score. Of the cultivars with pubescent sheaths, there were two distinct levels of pubescence. The first, represented by the cultivar TAM O-301 CIav9198 with the Lsp1 pubescence allele (visual score=5), was very pubescent with long hairs (approx. 1.5 mm). Cultivars with the second level of pubescence have shorter and fewer hairs than TAM O-301 CIav9198. This pubescence was most prominent on the sheath of the first true leaf with occasional hairs on the second leaf sheath.
