Abstract
Thirty-eight C4 species including both mono- and dicotyledons were surveyed for light-enhanced pyruvate uptake into mesophyll chloroplasts and tested whether this enhancement could be mimicked by either a 'sodium jump' or a 'proton jump' of the medium in the dark The majority of species responded to a sodium jump, while only species of the Andropogoneae and the Arundinelleae from the Gramineae responded to a proton jump.
