Abstract
Root growth in 14 bread wheat cultivars (C-306, HD-2009, HD-2733, HD-2402, HD-2329, PBW-343, HD-1949, HD-2718, HD-2643, HD-2428, HD-2189, HDR-77, HD-2285 and HD-2687) was studied at 14 and 28 days of seedling growth following in vitro embryo culture. Significant intervarietal differences with respect to shoot and root characters were observed. The moderately high heritability coupled with high percentage of genetic advance for number of roots at 28 days of age indicated that this character was controlled by additive genes and direct selection for high number of roots per plant will be profitable. Similar results were obtained for shoot length (plant height) at both growth stages. Root length exhibited non-additive nature of gene control, suggesting the suitability of heterosis breeding for the development of this character. A significant positive correlation between root length and shoot length was observed at 14 and 28 days of age. Yield per plant had a significant correlation with shoot length, number of tillers per plant, and panicle length. Shoot length was positively correlated with number of tillers per plant. Root length showed a positive correlation with plant height. Thus, the root character could contribute to the increase in yield per plant via shoot length. HD-2687, which showed superior root characteristics, had the highest yield per plant
