Abstract
A study was conducted to improve the biological control efficiency of P. fluorescens strain P5 via the introduction of a chitinase gene. A 6.5 kb DNA fragment containing a chitinase gene was inserted in vector pDSK519 to construct a new plasmid, pDSK51965. The new plasmid was introduced in strain P5, forming a new strain, P5-1. Restriction digestion and chitin plate culture confirmed that P5-1 contained a functional chitinase gene. P5-1 had higher effect than P5 against rice sheath blight and cotton damping off cause by Rhizoctonia solani . P5-1 also had higher effect compared to P5 in controlling wheat take-all disease ( Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici )
