Abstract
Stem rust of wheat, caused by Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici [ P. graminis ], was not observed in Maharashtra and Karnataka, India during rabi 2002/03. However, during rabi 2001/02, stem rust appeared in two trap nurseries. Leaf rust, caused by P. recondita f.sp. tritici [ P. hordei ], was observed during both years, but was more widespread during rabi 2001/02. During both years, maximum severity of leaf rust (80 S) was observed on wheat cultivars DWR 162 and MACS 2496. The near-isogenic lines Lr 9 and Lr 19 were resistant. The use of the leaf rust gene combination Lr 26+23 should be minimized or avoided in these areas whereas the gene combination Lr 34+13 should be promoted in wheat improvement programmes for peninsular India
