Abstract
Using 52 salinity tolerant genotypes of wheat, selection indices for grain yield were constructed. The genotypes were evaluated during rabi 1998-99 in Jobner, Rajasthan, India. All possible combinations based on 5 characters, i.e. days to flowering, tillers per plant, spikelets per ear, grains per ear and 1000-grain weight, were determined. The efficiency of indices over direct selection for grain ranged from 0.48 to 2.92. Selection index based on individual characters tillers per plant and 1000-grain weight alone expressed 1.79 and 1.62 times, respectively, more efficiency over direct selection for grain yield. A progressive increase in the relative efficiency based on 2, 3, 4 or 5 character combinations over direct selection was observed. Maximum advance (20.09) was expected while including all the 5 yield component characters, however, 4 character combinations including tillers per plant, spikelets per ear, grains per ear and 1000-grain weight was quite comparable (19.61), suggesting important role of these 4 characters while making selections specifically in saline environment
