Abstract
A study was conducted during the rabi season of 2000-01 in Pantnagar, Uttar Pradesh, India to evaluate the performance of 40 elite lines of wheat, and 5 control cultivars. The parameters tested were: days to heading, days to maturity, number of tillers/m SUP 2 , grains/spike, test weight and grain yield. The elite genotypes were divided into 4 clusters. Clusters I and II were further divided into 2 sub-clusters. The majority of the genotypes showing higher yield compared to the best control cultivar for this trait (Raj 3777) belonged to cluster III. The genotypes in cluster II generally showed high values for grains/spike and tillers/m SUP 2 . The cultivar RWP9910 was superior among the others for grain/spike. Donors for grain yield included genotypes in clusters III and IIB, while donors for earliness included those in cluster 1B
