Abstract
Genotypic variability was studied and genotypic and phenotypic correlations were determined in 10 bread wheat cultivars (C306, K9943, PBW500, PBW514, PBW396, HD2815, HD2816, HD2838, PBW175 and PBW343) under rainfed condition of R.S. Pura, Jammu and Kashmir, India, during 2001-02. Data were recorded for root number per plant, root length per plant, root weight per plant, root volume per plant, proline content of fresh leaves, leaf area index, number of effective tillers/m2, number of grains per ear, 1000-grain weight and grain yield per plot. Root weight per plant and proline content showed high genotypic coefficient of variation. The estimation of heritability and genetic advance in percentage of mean were substantially high to moderate for root weight per plant, proline content, leaf area index, number of effective tillers/m2 and grain yield per plot. Grain yield per plot was positively and significantly correlated with root number per plant, root weight per plant, leaf area index, number of effective tillers/m2 and proline content
