Abstract
Genetic studies were conducted during 1998 and 1999 in Romania, on the number of spikelets per ear, number of grains per ear, weight of grains per ear and 1000-grain weight, using 8 wheat lines and F SUB 1 hybrids, obtained by a diallel crossing system. Both additivity (g SUB i ) and dominance (l, l SUB i and l SUB ij ) gene effects were involved in the control of genetic characteristics. The genetic mechanisms involved in the 4 hereditary characteristics were of overdominant type. The narrow sense heredity coefficients had low values in both years of testing and required a great environmental influence on the expression of traits. As valuable parents for the creation of wheat varieties, typical of cropping in the area of Moldavia, the following lines showed exceptional performance: PI-2536-92 for the number of spikelets per ear; PI-2675-95 for the number of grains per ear; PI-2928-91 and PI-2782-93 for the weight of grains per ear; and PI-2416-95 and PI-2928-91 for 1000-grain weight
