Abstract
Lodging of wheat cultivars, characterized by different degrees of resistance to stalk lodging: Beogradjanka, Skopljnka, Agrounija (highly resistant), Zitarka and Zemunka as well as their reciprocal diallel hybrids, was investigated during 1990-91 in India, based on morpho-anatomical traits expression. Observations were recorded for shoot height to spike top, number of shoots in plant-clustering, diameter of the first internode above-ground, mass of one randomly selected stalk leaves and spike in early milk maturity when lodging occurred, and root development expressed by plant root mass to 25 cm depth. Regression analysis was applied and marginal values of the traits by which the greatest lodging occurred were established. Each increase in stalk height led to root development (mass) increases and lodging. The marginal values of shoot number, diameter of basal internode, and shoot mass were 11, 5 mm and 19.3 g, respectively. For selection of wheat lines resistant to lodging, it is recommended to choose plants with short stalk, large internodes, small aboveground mass and root of wide radius
