Abstract
Inheritance of the ability to accumulate avenalumin I (the oat phytoalexin) was analysed in relation to expression of rust resistance by making incomplete di-allele crosses with Shokan-1 which shows a hypersensitive type resistance to Puccinia coronata f.sp avenae race 226 Accumulation of avenalumin I in the heterozygous plants inoculated with race 226 was less than that in the homozygous resistant parent plant The final infection type of the hybrid plants was resistant However, microscopic observation showed that length of infection hyphae in the heterozygous plants was much longer than that in the parental Shokan-1, and small uredia were occasionally formed. Segregation of final infection types of resistance and completely susceptible F2 plants of Shokan-1 X Pc-38 and Shokan-1 X Kanota significantly fit the expected 3:1 phenotypic ratio. It was confirmed that resistance to race 226 (as judged by the length of infection hyphae and avenalumin accumulation at 96 h after inoculation) in each of the F2 plants segregated as a single gene. Genetic analysis showed that avenalumin accumulation in Shokan-1 in response to race 226 is controlled by a single co-dominant gene that is closely linked to genes for resistance to the crown rust fungus. These results suggest that the accumulation of avenalumin I is tightly linked to the expression of specific resistance of oats to the crown rust pathogen.
